Graded NM 7 by PSA. Hall of Famer. At the time of this writing, this example stands alone in PSA’s census reporting as a “1 of 1” at its tier with just two copies graded higher. Babe Ruth had led the American League in home runs in 1918 and 1919 while a member of the Boston Red Sox. After the 1919 season, Ruth was sold to the New York Yankees, where he again led the circuit in home runs with 54, nearly tripling the output of his nearest competitor, George Sisler. The offered card appears to picture a swinging Ruth in Red Sox garb, but clearly identifies him as a member of the Yankees and (instead of specifying his position as a fielder) describes the Babe as the “Home Run King.” This is an outstanding collectible that emerged as few other cards honored Ruth, who was then helping to improve baseball’s image in the wake of the “Black Sox” scandal, as well as significantly elevating his own performance. Very sharp-looking Near Mint condition.
